Anal abscess

Updated: May 17, 2022

Purulent inflammation in the area around the anus, which is characterized by the presence of a group of muscles separated by fatty spaces, which helps to form pus and stretch in this area.

Symptoms of perianal abscess:

Pain in the area around the anus is usually accompanied by a rise in temperature, swelling and local redness, and this phenomenon increases in diabetics.

Causes and risk factors for anal abscess:

There are four known types of anal abscess following a surgical incision in the anal opening, for example, surgery for hemorrhoids or anal fissures.

Diagnosis of anal abscess:

Diagnosis in most cases is based on an anal examination, but in more complex cases a transrectal ultrasound, MRI and CT scan are required.

Anal abscess treatment:

Treatment depends on opening and cleaning the abscess by surgery under the influence of general anesthesia in addition to complementary treatment with antibiotics.

Possible complications of a peripheral anal abscess include the formation of a fistula that rages itself. Intervention and surgery in rare cases lead to severe inflammation of the skin surrounding the anus, which may extend to the upper thigh and scrotum and cause gangrene in this area, which usually ends with complications that may be fatal. At the level of the kidneys and liver or general intoxication of the body, it is necessary to undergo continuous treatment with antibiotics in addition to surgeries to remove the dead tissues, and sometimes it is necessary to convert the faecal exit hole to a side opening in the abdominal wall.
